Keno Lottery Games and Odds Calculator

Although Keno is essentially a multi-number lottery game, the calculation of the odds is different from that multi-number lotto odds because of the inequality of the number of drawn numbers and that selected by the player. In lotto, the player selects n numbers from a set of N and the lottery draws n numbers, while in Keno while the player still selects n from N, the drawn numbers are D (different from n).

The notation we shall use for Keno games is, n/N/D

Types of Keno Games

There are two general types of Keno games, Regular Keno and Spot Keno games. In the Regular Keno game, the player selects a fixed amount of numbers, while in the Spot Keno game, the player has the liberty to choose how many numbers to play. With very few exceptions, nearly all Keno games consist of the numbers 1 to 80 to select from and 20 are drawn. Thus, N = 80 and D = 20. Then, in the Regular Keno the player selects 10 (n=10), while in the case of a Spot game, the player can select 10, or 9, or 8, etc. Therefore n can be 10, 9, 8, etc.

Regular Keno Games

In the common case of a 10/80/20 Keno game, there are 3,535,316,142,212,170,000 (Do you even know how to read it?) ways that the 80 numbers can be combined into groups of 20. So, if the player had to catch all the 20 numbers, the odds would be 1 in the this number. However, since the player has to select only 10, the number of combinations of 80 into groups of 10 are 1,646,492,110,120. Furthermore, the 20 drawn numbers can be grouped into 184,756 groups of 10, thus the player has this many chances out of the 1,646,492,110,120. Therefore, the odds of getting all 10 correct are 1 in (1,646,492,110,120/184,756) = 8,911,711.

The following table lists all the odds of the common regular Keno game. For other types of Keno games, you can use our Keno Odds Calculator

Spot Keno Games

Wnen the player selects other than 10 numbers, the odds will be different from the ones seen above. For example, if the player selects 8 numbers, then it will be an 8-spot game and the odds of getting 8 would be calculated by using 80 into 8, and 20 into 8 combinations.
